Los Angeles County Child and Adolescent Suicide Review Team (CASRT)
About CASRT
Under the direction of the Los Angeles County Inter-agency Council for Child Abuse and Neglect, CASRT reviews child and adolescent deaths from suicide with the goal of improving suicide prevention. The team is comprised of representatives from several organizations including:
- LA Suicide Prevention Network
- Department of Mental Health
- Dept of Public Health
- Suicide Prevention Advocates
- Other School Districts & Independent Schools
- Dept of Medical Examiner-Coroner
- LA County Office of Education
- Dept Children & Family Services
- Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services
- Inpatient & Outpatient Mental Health Providers
- County Counsel
- LA Unified School District
- District & City Attorney
- Law Enforcement
- Crisis Hotlines
- Higher Education
Team meeting are once per month for 3 hours in-person at the Dept of Medical Examiner-Coroner, however
for now the meetings are held virtually due to COVID pandemic precautions. The team usually reviews 1 case
(but no more than 2 cases) at each meeting. Confidentiality is paramount.
Roles and Responsibilities of Graduate Student Volunteers
Pre-code case(s) to be discussed at CASRT meeting.
(Estimate 1 hour per case.)
Attend and take notes at CASRT meeting.
(Estimate 3 hours per meeting.)
Post-code case(s) discussed at CASRT meeting.
(Estimate 1 hour per case.)
- Sign confidentiality agreement for CASRT Research Team and maintain confidentiality of all personally identifying information.
- Complete 1-hour orientation with CASRT Research Team to review processes
- Sign confidentiality agreement prior to each CASRT meeting and attend each meeting
- Send pre-coding documents to CASRT Research Team 24 hours prior to CASRT meeting
- Send post-coding documents to CASRT Research Team 24 hours after CASRT meeting
- Destroy all confidential documents immediately after sending pre- & post-coding forms
